Irina Jelavic: Of Lovers and Languages

@bismuthwisdom sorry I didn't see your tags earlier. I've actually wondered about what languages Irina speaks, and since you've brought it up, I now wanna talk about it.

First, we're gonna need an important screenshot:

So, it's said that Irina is fluent in ten languages. She's stated that the best way to learn a language is to get a lover who can speak it. The above map is list of some (pretty sure some) of her "lovers" who will help us determine which langauages she speaks.

Note: some of these hearts don't necessary fall over the man's country of origin. For example, Shinji's heart is placed next to Japan's map, likely because it'll cover it if it was placed on top. Likewise, David's heart is placed above Great Britian.

Okay, let's move on to the list:

Serbian: Of course, we're gonna start the list with her mother tongue.

English: Yeah, this one's obvious.

Japanese: Another obvious one.

Japanese Sign Language: As I've mentioned before, she communicated with Karasuma and the kids through sign language during the island arc.

French: Again, the Reaper Arc reveals she's been teaching Megu French.

Arabic: In that same arc, Yada mentioned one of Irina's story involving Arabian royalty and nearly lead to a war. 7 years later, she's sent to infiltrate an organization in the Middle East.

Portuguese: Pretty sure Anderson is from Brazil because apparently, his name is a popular there. I'm not sure how popular though, but we've got some Brazilian celebrities, namely athletes like Anderson Silva, Anderson Varejão, and Anderson Luís de Abreu Oliveira. So yeah, Irina knows portuguese.

Korean: First, we have Ji Sung (also spelled Ji-seong), whose heart is right next to South Korea. Second, in chapter 25, Irina briefly talks about Korean pronounciation.

So these are the languages I'm sure Irina is fluent in. There's still 2 more, and my guesses are:

Spanish or Italian: I'm not quite sure where Christiano is supposed to be from. I initially thought of Spain, but his heart can also be seen right next to Italy, so who knows? Maybe she knows both languages?

Eric...I'm not sure which African country he's supposed to be from, so I don't know which language Irina would acquire ro seduce him. Maybe she didn't have to pick up a new language though, maybe Eric already spoke French or Arabic.

Also, it should be noted Serbia has several minority languages. Maybe Irina is fluent in some of them.

For headcanons, I'd say she'd be fluent in Russian, Chinese, and Vietnamese; all of which she learns during canon or during the time skip.

That's all I've got on Irina. For the second tag, I'll do another post for the students because this one's long enough. However, I can make some language hcs for Korosensei and Karasuma.

Korosensei:

As a once notorious assassin, I don't doubt that he's just as multilingual as Irina is; I just don't know which langauges he would know. I like to think he's fluent in Chinese (Mandarin, Cantonese, and speaks in several dialects) since he keeps flying over to China and because he specializes in he Chinese cuisine.

Karasuma:

English: We did see him use it in Episode 10.

Japanese Sign Language: Again, the island arc.

I like to think that after marriage, Irina insists he learn Serbian since 1) their daughter will have more speakers to communicate with and 2) Irina already speaks his mother tongue, why can't he learn hers?

I can see her suggestively offering her help and like the straight lace that he is, Karasuma declines. Nevertheless, he agrees with her reasons and Serbian becomes their secret language, though they use it even when they don't gave to be secretive.

Also, I can see Karasuma shooting down her advances only in her mother tongue. It's his way of teasing her and Irina starts wondering if asking him to learn Serbian was a mistake...

My top 10 in advance of the final

so. i've finally written and thought about my actual top ten songs going into the final. i've actually also compiled my top 40 and my tops for the semis, but that's a bit late now. i'll do them in advance of next year though!

so, here, with comments, is my top ten for the final

1 - DE DIEPTE - an amazing song, by an amazing artist. i'm british but very into the dutch alt-pop scene (a joke scott and rylan made on tuesday) and when S10 was announced i was so excited. this song is everything i wanted and more - she's changed her style to suit a wider audience, and the da-da-da-da oeh-oeh aa-aa really brings in non dutch speakers, essential for this competition.

2 - MEÐ HÆKKANDI SÓL - wasn't too keen on the first listen (morning of sunday 13th march) but by the evening of the monday i was obsessed. amazing meaning behind the lyrics, and icelandic is such a lovely language to listen to. when this was announced as a qualifier i almost screamed (had to not tho as i was in the queue for a club) as i had prepared for the worst.

3 - LIGHTS OFF - one of the first entries to be released back in december. i had covid at the time, was on day 8 of 10 of isolation, and this buoyed me through the last two days. a great dance bop, the revamp arguably isn't as good but i love the pause before the chorus. she's improved a lot as a singer as well, literally screamed when this qualified, amazing song.

4 - IN CORPORE SANO - watched it, was bemused, watched again, watched again, looked up the lyrics, obsessed. amazing concept, almost performance art, i cannot get enough of this. look up the rest of her triptych, it's amazing. the other songs are called nobl and mekano, and the fact she entered the serbian national selection only to broaden her songs' reach, not intending to win, is iconic.

5 - HOLD ME CLOSER - i don't really have much to say here, it's just a very good song. a powerful chorus? maybe that's what draws me into it and separates it from other ballads for me.

6 - SENTIMENTAI - lithuanian is a beautiful language and it's amazing to finally have a song in it in the final. the older feeling of the song lends it an elegance and from everything that i've seen monika is an icon. i'm mostly excited about the lithuanian, but it's a song that i can't help swaying to. again i was thrilled when this qualified as it was borderline

7 - FULENN - i am in love with this devil-summoning masterpiece. something different from france, and in one of their marginalised langauges, really make this stand out. i particularly like the vibration-esque part of the second chorus, after the "tria' a ra ar c'haoud". great to have some celtic language representation as well, it's a travesty that we've (in the uk) never sent a welsh entry.

8 - TRENULEŢUL - this is another one which came out fairly early. i can't help bopping along to this and i really hope it does well in the final. it's such a jolly song with a serious meaning behind it, and the music video is so fun. not sure what i think of the slight revamp - i will still listen to the original - but i understand why it was revamped for the stage.

9 - SNAP - a non-offensive song with a great staging (that's unaffected by the broken sun). i didn't really pay attention to this until the second rehearsal on youtube, but i really do like it. maybe not something i'll still be listening to in a year, but definitely one i want to see do well.

10 - LLÁMAME - a nice surprise qualifier from thursday. the song definitely works better when you can see it being performed, but nonetheless it's a great song, with great choreo, and we love us some bisexual representation.

in case anyone is interested, my original top ten was the netherlands, iceland, czechia, slovenia, serbia, sweden, latvia, croatia, lithuania and france. semi one was particularly painful - i'd like to have seen thirteen of those songs through (but only seven from semi two)

what are your favourite languages?

OHHH ThIS is such a good question thank you! And I’m very much an OH SHINY now I cannot FOCUS type of person but! from the top and in no particular order: italian (the only aside from english i can even kind of speak and i really love finding random new words in it. learned a tea towell was a strofinaccio yesterday. incredible, and also i love the regional languages and dialects and differences), Hebrew both biblical and modern (hard as hell esp w vocabs but no lingusitic concept slaps harder with roots), Arabic (ditto with roots, my favorite dialect is al-sham/Levantine dialect of Lebanon, Palestine, Jordan, and Syria, I particularly love the sound), also Greek- I’ve never even tried to learn it but again with the deep deep history and i heard an anecdote about Greek trucks having metafora written on them because it’s a transfer and my brain was like. record scratch! i love langauges that feel like they’re stitching together all these strata of history and culture, the present and the past, ANYWAY 

some assorted OTHERS i love: Bengali/Bangla, everything about it is gorgeous and the LITERATURE! Tagalog- my Heritage Language (tm) have to be a bit

also have some friends that are functionally family that speak Korean and would love to learn that! Also just out of interest- Bosnian-Croatian-Montenegrin-Serbian was something I wrote about for a paper and it is SUCH a lovely language.

How many languages can you speak and on what level? My native language is Hungarian, I speak English fluently, some Swedish, very little German, maybe still a bit of French. And of course Finnish. Do you have favourite words ? I have many favourite words in Finnish. Karhu (bear), pupu (bunny), muki (mug), donitsi (donut), pitsa (pizza) - words that look or sound funny to me. I also like words that look similar to Hungarian words but mean sth else. E.g. kuka, because it means dustbin in Hungarian. Onko sinulla lempisanoja? Minulla on monta lempisanaa suomeksi. Karhu, pupu, muki, donitsi, pitsa - sanoja, jotka näyttävät tai kuulostavat hauskalta minulle. Favourite language teacher?  At university I had a teacher on a psycholinguistics course I really like. I also liked the translation course where the teacher was a translator. Native speaker or not, as a teacher?  I think it would be nice for Finnish learning to learn from a native speaker. Unfortunately learning at a Finnish course is not possible here. 20. In case you are planning to have children, would you like to raise them bilingual {multilingual}? Or in another case, what do you think about teaching such young children languages?  Yes, it would be nice to do that. If I got a Finnish boyfriend/husband, I’d like to teach our kids both Finnish and Hungarian. Voisitko kasvattaa lapsesi kaksikieliseksi? Joo, voi olla kiva tehdä sen niin. Iv'e gotten so much worse at english since I started to get good at other languages. Like today my mom told me to put the cardboard milk carten in the burn and I said, "No, it has a plastic." A PLASTIC. like what? that's not right???? If this only happened once it would just be me mispeaking, but like, this is happeneing a lot. I think I got that particular thing from french. Putting imbetween words in places they don't go in English, except that it would be du plastique not un plastique so...IDK. (I speak, English, Russian, Latin, Japanese, Serbian, and French but it used to be really hard for me to learn languages like I was working on Japanese and not making much progress but then suddenly it was just like, hey you heard this thing once know you know that word. But only if its a langauge I like. I happen to not like the sound of many other languages so apparently I don't just absorb knowledge like I do for the ones I like.) (It's really weird its like I suddenly developed perfect memory but only for languages and only languages I like. Does anyone know how that's possible???)
